I spent an afternoon looking for interesting typography in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
I took photographs of numberforms on the gravestones and monuments.
Then another friend and I vectorized the numbers, intentionally maintaining roughness on the more weathered examples.
I decided to use the numbers to laser cut acrylic into clock faces. Below is the Adobe Illustrator file set up for laser cutting.
Here are two assembled clocks that I showed as art pieces in Gowanus Open Studios. I chose low contrast combinations for certain elements to deemphasize the value of fixation on marking time.
